Frame Gilding with Gold Leaf

Frame Gilding with Gold Leaf

  • by Chris
Frame gilding is a meticulous and traditional craft that involves applying a thin layer of gold leaf to a decorative frame, enhancing its beauty and value.
The process begins with the preparation of the frame by cleaning and smoothing its surface, often with layers of gesso and fine sanding. A layer of bole, a clay-based material, is then applied as a base to provide the gold with a warm, reflective foundation. Once the bole is ready, sheets of delicate gold leaf are carefully laid onto the surface using a gilder's tip, adhering through a process called water gilding or oil gilding, depending on the technique. The gold is gently pressed and smoothed into place, ensuring it conforms to the intricate details of the frame. After drying, the gold is burnished with an agate stone to achieve a brilliant shine or left matte for a softer finish.
The result is an elegant and timeless frame that showcases the craftsmanship and artistry of gilding.
