Signwriting Paints

Signwriting enamel paints

Signwriting enamel is chosen for the way it flows from a lettering brush and forms a controlled edge. We stock oil based gloss and matt enamels for signwriting, alongside specialist paints for other finishes and applications.

Our own-brand range includes Wright-it gloss signwriting enamel and Cover-it matt enamel. We also stock One Shot and a wider selection of signwriting paints, so you can choose the finish and paint system that suit the job.

Gloss or matt signwriting enamel?

Gloss enamel gives lettering a reflective finish and is a familiar choice for fascias, vehicle lettering and decorative signwork. Our Wright-it gloss range sits alongside One Shot gloss lettering enamels.

For work that calls for less reflection, explore our Cover-it matt range. A matt finish can suit backgrounds and interior lettering where you want the colour and shape to stand out without a gloss sheen.

We recommend checking the individual product information for surface suitability, preparation and interior or exterior use.

The rest of the signwriting paint range

Our One Shot paints include gloss signwriting enamels and Low VOC colours, supported by their own range of sundries.

We also stock Flamboyant enamels, Glocote fluorescent paint, Alphakrylik, classic casein paints and Ardenbrite metallic finishes.

The wider collection includes both solvent based and water based products. Each has its own application and cleaning requirements, so check the specification for the paint you choose.

Choosing your brush and sundries

A suitable brush helps you make the most of the paint’s flow. Explore our signwriting brushes for chisel writers, lettering quills, one strokes and liners.

Choose compatible brush cleaner and reducer products for preparation and clean-up. Reducers and additives should always be selected for the particular paint system.

Signwriting enamel FAQs

Can signwriting enamel be used outside?

Many gloss signwriting enamels are suitable for exterior lettering. Check the product specification and prepare the surface accordingly. We do not recommend assuming every specialist paint in this collection has the same exterior suitability.

What is the difference between signwriting enamel and household gloss?

Signwriting enamel is formulated for lettering, where brush flow, coverage and control at the edge of a stroke matter. Household gloss is generally intended for coating larger areas of trim or other surfaces.

Do I need to prime first?

That depends on the surface, its condition and the coating already on it. Follow the paint manufacturer’s preparation and primer guidance, and test an unfamiliar combination before starting the finished work.
