Amelia Jane Gilding - 19th century Rococo Revival Frame

This 19th century Rococo Revival frame housed the painting ‘At the Lochside’ by Scottish Artist Joseph Morris Henderson R.S.A.
The frame had been re-gessoed and gilded resulting in detailed elements to become lost and look irregular. The new gesso layer, bole and gilding had started to lift away from the original composition decoration causing it to become flaky and unstable.
Gold paint had also been applied to areas of the frame, which has now become oxidised and consequently turned it brown as well as flaking away from the layers beneath.
Subsequently the frame was stripped back to its original base layer and new layers of bole were applied.
The frame was then gilded using traditional water and oil gilding techniques with 23.75ct gold leaf before being antiqued accordingly
