What a journey!
Last week Rima & Mcrae finished up the install of this incredible verre églomisé artwork inside the Iconic Tower in Cairo Egypt, a cylinder of mirrored artwork which envelopes the hotel lobby, filling the space with warm light and the gentle forms of exotic foliage.
What began as tentative conversations back in the 2010s has evolved into a project of remarkable scale — over 160m² of gilded glass across 335 individual panes. For the past six months, the team of master gilders at Rima & Mcrae have been carefully crafting each element in the studio.
Projects of this scale always begin the same way: with pencils, paper, and curiosity. Translating A3 drawings into a monumental artwork is no small challenge. Through sketching, tracing, and studying plant structures, their team developed a visual language for the piece, building a library of over 200 unique leaf forms that shape the final design.
